The entire idea for this work came to me when I saw this image by ~UniqueStocks[link]
I've been working on it for about 3 weeks and I'm really happy with the finished work. This is the third version, the first two used a different model shot from the same stock pack. Here's the WIP with the other two versions:
I like the idea and the composition of this picture. I see the idea as some kind of goddess creating the storm where she is just by blowing on a little earth. It gives a very nice idea of loop in space. The composition is nice and quite dynamic with a good use of the diagonal with umbrella. Perhaps a larger opening in front of the character would have give a stronger idea of movement, but it's not a real problem, the water is clearly giving enough movement.
The technical part clearly needs more work. First the light, photography is about light and a good photomanipulation is also about giving a rather coherent light. The main problem comes from the background, you have a nice storm picture, very dark, very blue with lot of noise suggesting a high ISO for the photography. This mean that an integrated thing should be quite dark with probably low contrast. Of course this would give a resulting picture with not so much impact... So you have to create coherent light source in your picture to create the contrast and impact you need. I see two solutions : - make the little earth as light source, probably floating a little bit above the hands of the girl. - make the wing luminous Of course you will have to make by hand the light interaction on your character, but I'm quite sure you can win some impact. As a colour choice I would give a warm yellow or orange giving a good contrast with the background.
The space and perspective are also very important, there is clearly something wrong between the wings and the umbrella. The wings should be below the umbrella. Speaking of the umbrella I think the surface should receive water, it's seems bar too clean and dry... It's the middle of the storm the umbrella is a good element so show this.
At final, it's far from being a bad picture, the idea is nice but the technique fail a little bit to properly express your idea.
I've come over to offer my input as a photomanipulator after seeing ^SanguineVamp's journal for artists requesting critiques.
I like that this manip is quirky and different. Different from both traditional fairy works, as well as what you'd usually expect from a manip with a dark sea background. So the idea itself is very good and I applaud you for your creativity in getting these two styles to work together in such a unique way.
The problems I see with it would be first and foremost the wings. You can see them fully which would mean they're on the side of the umbrella and that throws off a natural perspective. I think a more natural placement would be under the umbrella, which means the tips should be erased. A second problem, albeit less noticeable, is the hair. It's too "cut". By that I mean it looks too extracted and perfectly shaped. Naturally hair has the occasional stray hairs, even on perfectly stylized hairs by professional hairdressers. And lastly, although potentially just a personal preference, I would have liked the glow breath to reflect on the globe, or have it be more transparent, so there wasn't such a big contrast between the 2 elements.

I hope that helps
